Since we are all waiting for a comeback, here's the meanings behind @RBW_MAMAMOO latest comeback concept 'reality in BLACK', a thread
#MAMAMOO
1) Destiny: the concept revolves around 4 different universes in which each member has a different life and occupation. The answer to the question 'What if Mamamoo is not Mamamoo?' is that even with different lives in different universes, Mamamoo is destined to eventually meet. -
-The song 'Destiny' delivers this message. The track's Korean title is '우린 결국 다리 만날 운면이었지' which translates in 'We were destined to eventually meet again'.
2) BLACK: the album is called 'reality in BLACK'. BLACK is actually an acronym and stands for Bless Life And Carry Knowledge, meaning that whatever occupation you have, you're blessed and amazing. In the MV for the title track Hip they embody different occupations, from a mother-
-to a boxer. There's no such thing as most important occupation, you're important whatever your choices in life have been. In Hip Wheein sings "I love you, whatever you say, respect you, whatever you do". These lines are followed by her saying "she's crazy", this is-
- actually our society that judges this mentality of respect between each other. Society is still far away from adopting this kind of mentality and Mamamoo makes us aware of it.
Hwasa wrote her rap part in Hip and is a credited composer of the song.
3) Confidence/Self-love: Hip delivers the message to live a life that's most like yourself without minding others' eyes. You can only be 'hip' when you love yourself wholeheartedly without being self-conscious. The track 4x4ever is also an ode to love yourself for who you are.
4) Cyberbullying: Hip and the track 4x4ever are a message to the people who use socials to write malicious comments about others. This performance sums up the message they're trying to send and hits different when you know that Moonbyul wrote her own rap.
5) LGBTQ+ representation: one of Solar's personas in Hip is a rockstar who performs with a group of drag queens. With the appearance of the drag queens in the MV, Mamamoo give representation to the LGBTQ+ community and challenge the conservative ideas of the society they live in.
6) Feminism: the Hip MV principal stage is inspired by the feminist artist Barbara Kruger. Behind them there are 4 pics of themselves with some parts of their faces censored: their eyes, mouths and Wheein's mole. This is symbolizes how women in society are being criticized for-
- what they say, wear, their physical appearance etc.
Also, Moonbyul flips gender stereotypes by portraying roles often taken by men: a MV director, a choreographer and a CEO. These are usually positions of power that are filled by men, and she overturns these gender stereotypes.
(I would like to say that this is my interpretation to what the censored parts of their faces mean. It's art and it can be interpreted in different ways. But it's undeniable that the main stage was inspired by Barbara Kruger's art)
7) Climate change: the Hip MV is the first one in kpop to reference climate change. One of Wheein's personas is an environmentalist who leads a protest to raise awareness. -
- The video also shows Moonbyul and Hwasa at the protest, only stopping by to take pictures.
This highlights how people tend to be loud about social issues without actually taking any action. This emphasizes how some individuals “act” woke just to be trendy.
Their next cb will be later this year, with reality in BLACK they delivered strong messages and I hope they'll continue to stand for what they believe in. Remember to collect hearts/mubeats/tickets in the voting apps and stream.
