Twenty years ago today I began my first full-time job, assisting a literary agent at a sports/model agency. On my first day, the CEO, a multi-millionaire in his 70s, yelled at me in front of the whole office for not delivering his memo to my boss fast enough.
I said, through tears, “but it’s my first day!” And he said “with that attitude you’re not gonna last very long in this company.”
There was finger-pointing, and if I’m recalling correctly, angry spittle. And I was like, “so this what work is.”
It was my 22nd birthday.
I quit a year later when 9/11 “ruined Jack Welch’s book launch.” Truly, that was the takeaway at the agency. I should have quit that day 20 years ago.
Needless to say he was friends with Donald Trump.
Side note: the golf people, the tennis people, all terrible. The baseball agents who repped Jeter were the absolute nicest, most decent people at the company.
