I really want to stop Trump.
So I'm headed to where I grew up in Pennsylvania tomorrow and Monday to knock on doors to mobilize voters.
What I'll be doing is "safety-first deep canvassing."
Here's a THREAD on what that is, why I'm doing it, and what you can do. 1/

It's "safety-first" because there are really strict, thoughtful safety protocols.
The safety of both the voters and volunteers is the first priority. 2/ https://www.ctctogether.org/safety-first

It's called "deep canvassing" because it isn't focused on briefly informing. It's also not about us volunteers arguing or convincing. That doesn't work.
It's a more personal interaction, drawing out the voter's own feelings and beliefs. It's proven to persuade and activate. 3/

I'll be joining with the deep canvassing experts from @CTCTogether and the @LALGBTCenter's Leadership Lab.

I was fortunate enough to join @CTCTogether in 2018 in Staten Island.
We knocked doors and talked to voters about how the "politics of hate" hurts the ones we love.
This worked. It persuaded swing voters to replace a Republican Congressman. We won. 6/ https://twitter.com/Mlsif/status/1221451478348500992

Why am I doing this on a long holiday weekend?
It'd be nice to do "fun" things with people I know and love this weekend!
But duty, sacrifice, and embracing the joy of the work itself are super important! 7/

For me, this means time, hassle, and social discomfort.
This week I had 4 hours of training, 2 hours getting tested, figuring out travel to Philly. I plan to be sleep in a tent in someone's backyard. I'll be uncomfortable talking to strangers about politics. 8/

But I *really* want to do my part to stop Trump.
And beyond helping make more votes happen, I actually expect this work will be joyful and meaningful. It's a nice group of volunteers and talking to strangers – after you get passed the nervousness – is fun and special. 9/

So I hope you'll think about what's important to you.
Do you want to stop Trump?
Can you can block off time to make more votes happen?
How?
When?

While I think we need more safety-first canvassing, I get that it's not yet everywhere.
And even then, it's not for everyone, whether because of feeling too risky or because the timing and logistics aren't possible for you.
But there are other GREAT options. 11/

So I hope – if you similarly want Trump out of office and are willing to *do something* – that you'll look into making calls or sending texts.

Specifically, I'd be happy to answer any questions, help you explore action possibilities, brainstorm how to overcome any barriers, provide pro-tips, and give any ongoing support/accountability you want.

Day 1 recap
- Dozens of canvassers!
- Hundreds of doors knocked!
- Trump won PA by 40,000 votes and is *the* state likeliest to tip the election
- We all need to get more involved
- Bonus: a nice end to the day with some nature!

Haven’t camped in a while!
Was nice to wake up in a tent at sunset and then get a little reading in ( @rsgexp is

Laughed realizing I was unintentionally reading about labor organizing on Labor Day!
