Is #AirBnB a game changer for #RemoteWork? Quick Thread 🧵
After recently accepting a job that is 100% remote one of my first instincts was to look on @Airbnb for places throughout California and the US to see what opportunities for housing might be like. 🏠

Traditionally I have always turned to @Craigslist, and more recently @Zillow.
But one of the fascinating aspects of #AirBnB aside from the single day rentals, is that many hosts offer month long discounts of around 35%.

@AirBnB provides housing for vacationers, and also short term housing locations without a lease easily charged to a credit card.đź’ł
Typically month-to-month rentals are harder to come by, which I never fully understood why landlords prefer to lock-in tenants. Why commit to a potentially terrible tenant? 🧟‍♂️

The flexibility to change locales is enticing for a job with no central office. All you need is #WiFi.
My brother actually worked remotely teaching English online to children in China for a number of years while traveling the globe, including Costa Rica. While the low cost of living and ideal tropical paradise are enticing, WiFi and the threat of rainy season can be a challenge.
Recently @SteveBartlettSC former CEO of @TheSocialChain has escaped to the perfect Costa Rican villa to write his new book, as let’s just say it’s everything you dreamed of in a jungle get-away. https://twitter.com/stevebartlettsc/status/1301089205511127041
But for many people traveling internationally while working remote is a little too complicated. For myself, I would love to drag my wife and two kids with me across the globe, but let’s face it there are some serious logistic considerations even without COVID. So back to the US.
With almost 34 million users and approximately 660K hosts at the time of writing this, #AirBnB has become the largest room-night hospitality company in the world, surpassing all major hotel chains while owning no property. #disruption

AirBnB recently filed to #IPO. $ABNB
Most of the rentals are geared to short term vacation stays, from a financial standpoint many of the hosts would prefer to have longer term guests to maximize their revenue. In hotels this is referred to as REVPAR (Revenue per Available Room). 35% discount assumes <65% occupancy.
#WorkFromHome and #RemoteWork is new to some and familiar to others. Myself, I have been working on and off remote for the past 3-4 years, and I enjoy the freedom that it allows, but I have never really taken advantage to live in new places regularly. Mostly I officed from home.
It will be interesting to follow this trend of #remotework as we see exodus from San Francisco / Silicon Valley for cost of living, homelessness, crime and tax incentives outside California.

I am not fullly ready to leave my beach apartment in San Diego, but I’m tempted.🌊🏄💻
