We are watching Top Chef & I’m always amazed at how in so many professions you’re judged by the dish/case you’re handling right now. No one cares about all the other cases you did well; it’s what you’re doing right now. We cops get too much deference or excuses. We must be better
No one cares about your good intentions or that you’re having a bad day. What matters is the call/meal/case you’re on right then and there. Restaurant workers have to do well every single meal. Cops need to do the same. Handle the call you’re on and handle it well & with kindness
I’ve always thought that being a convenience store worker is harder than being a cop. Or working retail shopping. We cops demand immediate and total compliance too often when we don’t k ie what’s going on. Again, compliance is not the goal of the 911 call. It’s a path.
I want to circle back to this cuz I think it’s important. Police have awesome responsibilities but also awesome powers & deference. We get the benefit of the doubt. Always. I’m not so sure we should. And I know we should second guess ourselves. Our neighbors deserve it
We can learn a lot from restaurant workers or sales workers. I get our job as cops is different to a degree but it’s not in isolation or from a other universe. Our job is wrapped up in the point of it all, the goal of a community. We can do our job better. Or we can get mad.
