Quick thread to let @officialBBWAA voters know a little more about Allan Simpson as a Spink Award finalist. I had the honor of working with Allan for 9 years and spending 21 years at @BaseballAmerica, which he founded in his garage in 1981.
Allan changed the way you consume baseball. He started doing top 10 prospect lists in 1981, started covering college baseball, the minors and, most of all, the @MLBDraft. No one else was covering it like him, and he was all over it, with unmatched passion for the game.
Allan had plenty of help, from @TracyRingolsby, who helped him line up correspondents and launch the mag, to of course Miles Wolff, who bought the mag in 1982 and moved it to Durham. They had a feel for the game and rode the minor league boom while simultaneously driving it.
Allan set BA on its course of covering baseball at all levels from a scouting and player development point of view, and basically invented prospect & draft the way you experience it today. He had a feel for the game that can't be taught and influenced it for 25 years at BA.
Allan also helped BA develop its own, from @alanschwarz to @jimcallisMLB to folks like me and @jjcoop36 and many moore. He reshaped baseball's landscape from a small indy magazine in downtown Durham. He's a Hall of Famer in my book. Here's to him getting the Cooperstown call.
And I misspelled “more” ... man, I am rusty at writing. #VoteAllanSimpson
