“she” lyrics interpretation by me, a thread:
-i think she is about a man struggling with gender identity, or gender presentation

perhaps wanting to dress or act a certain way but feeling the pressure of being emasculated in society
-“nine in the morning a man drops his kids off at school, and he’s thinking of you”
in this story i believe it’s the story of a man who lives a normal life, but he’s thinking of the person he wishes he could be
-“sends his assistant for coffee in the afternoon, around 1:32, like he knows what to do”
i think he notes the time as it’s the only thing he can be sure of, he even has to pretend to be sure to send his assistant for coffee, he’s pretending he has a hold on his life
-“she, she, she lives in daydreams with me”
the person in his head is a she, she’s only in his daydreams, it’s where she lives, he also sings this is a higher register to imitate a female voice
-“she, she’s the first one that i see and i don’t know why”
there’s no reason he can find as to why she is his first instinct to be

-“i don’t know who she is”
this was the line that made me feel it wasn’t about a girl, it’s not someone he recognizes, it’s him
-“he takes a boat out imagines just sailing away”
he goes out alone wanting to leave, go away from everyone he knows and who everyone knows him as
-“and not telling his mates, wouldn’t know what to say”
especially between men the stigma of talking about mental issues is high and he has no idea to even bring it up, he’d rather leave without saying anything
-“lives for the memory, a woman that’s just in his head”
i think the memory is when he realized he’d rather explore how he wants to dress, act, be, but he can’t actually do it, only in his head

-but he keeps living for the chance one day he might be able to be her for real
-“and she sleeps in his bed, while he plays pretend”
obviously the only person who sleeps in his bed is the man, the woman is him, and he’s playing pretend that he is her, or pretending to not be her to everyone else
