what having add/adhd is like:

some of the many ways to describe it. imagine you are in a room with 1000 tvs all on different channels. now try to focus on just one. there's a million things going on at once, all of equal importance. an itch you can't quite scratch.
these are some of the different ways you may hear it described as. and yes all are true.

when you hear hyperactivity you may be quick to picture a 7yr old running around playing. this is not always the case. you may not experience hyperactivity at all or you may experience it
in different ways.

when you think about having difficulty focusing you may just think it's only bc of daydreaming, or the million thoughts you can't focus on. these are both common causes but there is much more.
the following is a list of other things that many with adhd also experience. most of these I struggle with myself or have seen others struggle with.

hyperfixation. all you want to talk about is your interests/hobbies. or you are taking a math test & instead of skipping the
problem you don't know, you spend the entire class trying to figure it out and end up leaving the rest of the test blank (this has actually happened to me a lot)

rejection sensitive dysphoria. you are really sensitive to what others say or think about you. you get easily upset
if you think someone has criticized you or is ignoring you. even if that's not the case. low self- esteem. you either go out of your way to make others like you or you stop trying all together and socially withdraw (this happens to me quite often)
forgetfulness. studying for a test all night and forgetting everything. setting your keys down for 1second and immediately forgetting where you put them

easily getting upset or overwhelmed. for me I have cried bc I didn't understand something or didnt get it right the first time
fidgeting. constantly shaking your leg. cracking your knuckles. fixing/playing with your hair. scratching. etc.

overthinking/decision fatigue/executive dysfunction. everyone has had trouble making a decision at some point in their life but the difference w adhd is it can
completely stop you from doing anything at all. for example, knowing you need to get up and move a book to the bookshelf but you can't bring yourself to physically get up and do it. this can lead to disorganization, not being able to plan easily.
object permanence. many people with adhd often struggle with object permanence. out of sight, out of mind. and sometimes even in sight, out of mind. like if I need to figure out when all my assignments are due my brain doesn't always tell me "hey! you need your planner" even if
it's right in front of me.

intrusive thoughts. worrisome thoughts about what might happen to you/a loved one, a mistake you might make, impulsive act you could commit. these aren't just "oh I might dye my hair tomorrow." many can be unwanted and can get as bad as focusing on
violent/socially unacceptable images. they can come from out of nowhere, causing anxiety. you will never act on these thoughts but they scare you. these thoughts feel threatening and the harder you try to forget & suppress them the more they stick in your mind. not everyone
struggles with intrusive thoughts. sadly I am one of the ones who does and they cause me great anxiety.

likely to also suffer from depression and/or anxiety disorders.
not everyone with adhd will experience all of these, and they can be experienced at different levels of severity. I was diagnosed with adhd when I was about 7/8. I know some people who as they got older they learned how to cope with/manage it and be taken off medication.
for me, mine seems to have gotten worse as I got older.

again not everyone experiences/exhibits the same symptoms. everything I listed above I have personally experienced, except for depression/anxiety disorders. I do get really had anxiety and do sometimes get anxiety attacks
but have never been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.

I know this tread is long and if you made it this far, thank you. I just wanted to shine a light on what else comes along with having adhd and that it's not always as simple as difficulty focusing and 'crackhead' energy
