So here's a thread about Joe Alwyn's life story/background. Just facts about him that maybe you'll be interested to read!
He was born 'Joseph Matthew Alwyn' on Feb 21, 1991 (age: 29) in Crouch End, North London. He's the eldest son of a psychotherapist/writer mother & a documentary filmmaker father. (more details about his fam in the next tweet)

(Pics: Joe's family home/Crouch end area)
His mother is Elizabeth Meakins Alwyn who is a psychotherapist & a writer. Her first book 'What will you do with my story?' came out in 2012, Which discusses mental health. She also write columns for 'The independent'. Mrs Alwyn attended one of Taylor's rep tour concerts with Joe
The Alwyns are known to be very close to each other kind of family as what Elizabeth Alwyn described in one of her columns in 2013, She said that her way of raising her 3 boys was to encourage them to follow their interests, And her eldest (aka Joe) wanted to become an actor!
Here's a pic of Joe (23 at that time), Patrick his youngest brother (9), Tomas his middle brother (21) & their mother Elizabeth. Elizabeth thanked her 3 sons & their father Richard Alwyn in her first book introduction for always being themselves.
Fun fact: Joe's mother Elizabeth always refers to him as Joseph not his nickname Joe.
Moving on to Joe's father, Richard Alwyn who is the son of William Alwyn (Joe's grandfather) a well-known composer. He's a documentary filmmaker & director. In 2006 his doc 'The Beslan Siege' won Best Current Affairs Doc. Television Programme at the Prix Italia festival in Venice
Richard is so supportive of Joe & his acting career, He was also one of the reasons why Joe wanted to become an actor. Cause as a son of a director he grew up watching a lot of films & going to theatres obv cause of his father, Which made Joe want to become a part of this world!
Joe was brought up along with his 2 brothers, Tomas (Tom) who is 2 years younger than him (currently 27) and Patrick who is 14 years younger than Joe (currently 15).

1st pic: Joe & Patrick
2nd pic: Tom, Taylor & Joe
3rd pic: Taylor with Patrick & a fan
Joe's middle brother Tom (27) works for various charities in the UK such as 'Care international UK' 'international alert' & works at the digital communications of 'ODI UK'. As what his social media accounts shows he's a big supporter of human rights & global humanitarian issues.
Joe's youngest brother Patrick seems to be the closest Alwyn to Taylor. She's his name written on her junior jewels shirt in the LWYMMD, He attended one of her rep tour concerts, Went with her to a fan's house in London & End game mv sets. He was 11 when Taylor started dating Joe
Patrick was also there at one of the reputation secret sessions. And he seems close to Joe as much as Taylor that they sometimes wear the same t-shirts! 😸
Now done with Joe's family, Moving on to his education & early life!
As a kid, Joe Alwyn joined City of London school, An independent day school for boys which is one of the most academically selective, successful & expensive schools in the country. He left it in 2009. In the first pic is young Joe as 'Snowy' in a school production of 'Tintin'!
Joe said that he has so many good memories from his school (In pics, Joe talking about his old school in a recent interview) One of the funniest memories is his teacher who tried to make him cut his hair, At the end of every report there would be a message: Ps. Joe get a haircut!
Despite Joe's love for theatre he wasn't involved much in Drama at school, As a shy kid he 'secretly' wanted to become an actor. He used to play sports & soccer instead. 'It was something I knew I enjoyed, but part of me shied away from that side of things' He explained it.
"I knew at school that I wanted to act, but I didn’t know how to get there. I knew nobody else who wanted to be an actor, So there wasn’t a clear road-map on how achieve it! I largely kept it to myself. I would look up Drama Schools online & think about applying, but in secret"
At the age of 10, Joe auditioned for 'Sam' in the movie 'Love actually' (Which is surprisingly one of Taylor's most fav movies)
Joe talked about his first audition to Vogue UK in 2018 “ I remember reading some scenes in Hugh Grant when I was very young, But I didn't get the part”
Since Joe was too shy to reveal his desire of becoming an actor to his parents, He ended up joining Bristol University instead of a Drama school. Which he loved & got a degree in English literature (According to what I read). Later he applied to Drama School & was accepted.
It was a big moment for Joe to be accepted in the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, As he finally felt that he could do it. A friend of him revealed that Joe was the heartthrob of the drama school but never had a girlfriend because he was so committed to his craft!
A classmate (Jordan) revealed to dailymail UK "Joe's very charismatic, he's what I refer to as a quintessential panty-dropper. Your classic prince charming. Girls want to throw themselves at him. It's the way he holds himself. But to a certain extent he was married to his work!"
Nick Moseley, Drama school’s principal lecturer said "When Alwyn arrived at the school he brought a maturity and intelligence that was of immense benefit to the group. He had a passion for the work & a conviction within his own artistry that was an inspiration to his colleagues”
When Joe turned 25, Even before he graduates from the drama & speech school he already started making moves towards his career. As casting director Avy Kaufman who worked with director Ang Lee had been trying to fill the lead role for 'Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk' for months.
“I tried to find somebody who was close to the bone of the person that Billy was, As soon as I saw Joe's tape I was like Oh my God that’s Billy! There was something very subtle about his reading. You could feel the tenderness inside of him. He just felt real” Kaufman explained.
Once Joe was accepted as Billy in 'Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk' he flew to New York to start shooting for his first movie along with Kristen Stewart & Vin Diesel, When director Ang Lee saw him for the first time he was worried that Joe was 'too handsome for the role'!
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk was released on Nov 9th, 2016. Marking Joe's first step in Hollywood as a rising actor.

He started secretly dating Taylor a couple of months before this, On 28th September. It's believed that they met for the first time in May at the Met Gala.
Since his debut Joe starred in 7 films & 1 miniseries, He has 2 upcoming!
He appeared in 4 films in 2018 alone: Klaus Eichmann in operation finale. Samuel Masham in The Favourite with Emma Stone & Olivia Colman, It received 10 Oscar nominations & won 184 awards including 7 BAFTAs
In 2018 he also starred as Robert Dudley in Mary Queen of Scots which received 3 BAFTA nominations, And as Henry Wallace in Boy Erased.
In 2019 he played Gideon Brodess in the Oscar-nominated Harriet (which is my personal fav). And the miniseries A Christmas Carol as Bob Cratchit
In Harriet Joe Alwyn played the role of a slave owner, The actress who played Harriet Cyntgia Erivo revealed that it was so comfortable working with Joe even during the tough slave owner scenes, She said that Joe was so nice, lovely & worried about her all the time! 🤍
Joe also opened up about playing a role like Gideon Brodess in Harriet, He said "The idea of slavery is repulsive and abhorrent. And trying to find a way to connect with the role was hard".

He genuinely has a very kind, well-educated & sweet personality!
In 2018, Joe was honoured at the Cannes film festival with the Chopard Trophy which recognizes upcoming film stars. "I feel lucky to do something that I love as a job, And to be recognized in this way at a relatively early stage of my career is a huge vote of confidence” — Joe
As for his private relationship with Taylor, Joe only said "I don’t think anyone you meet on the streets would just spill their guts out to you, therefore why should I? I think it’s normal" "Someone's private life is by definition private. We both prefer to talk about work."
Joe is expected to appear in 2 new movies in 2021 'The Souvenir Part II' & 'The Last Letter from Your Lover' as 'Laurence Stirling'. Which will be his 9th & 10th roles in less than 4 years of his career!
Just wanted to add that Joe has such a good American accent that his co-star in Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk didn't know that he was British until 2/3 weeks of shooting!
And this's the only pic (unfortunately) we have of Joe as a kid! For the first few seconds I didn't actually recognize him but whatever, he looks so cute! Maybe @josalw will share some with us in the future 😸
I think this's the end of the thread for now cause I can't actually remember what else I've planned to post..it's 5 am here so my brain stopped working lol. I tried to share all the information that I know related to Joe just to give y'all a better view about whom he actually is.
Btw Patrick Alwyn is 17 not 15, that was a typo mistake! He's as old as me lmao
I've put all this here for y'all to get to know Joe so that you RESPECT him. He's a great human & hardworking when it comes to his profession, He's an amazing background & everyone who worked with him has nothing but nice things to say about him. No reason to disrespect this man.
Also, Some of the used pics in this thread are credit to Joe Alwyn's Fan pages on Instagram/Tumbler. Including Joe Alwyn daily & Joe Alwyn India on IG. I've to give em the cr for the pics they originally posted 🤍
