While there’s a lot of conversation around how black colleagues and colleagues of colour in academia are subjected to institutional violence and how we can support them and amplify their voices, it is extremely important as Indian researchers/academics we do some soul searching.
Our compliance with the caste system, the ingrained racism against dalit, adivasi people and folx from NE India says a lot about how we gauge our positionality. Identifying as a POC in a western institution doesn’t absolve us of from encouraging and supporting racism in our own
country where many of us keep enjoying our caste and class based privileges. It is painful to unpack and break away from normalized institutional racism. But you cannot shout out for an inclusive society in the west and at the same time remain complacent in the violence against
those at the margins in the east.
