this shouldn’t be a hot take but it is and i hate it so much. if you’re wondering why... three things schools value most are productivity, memory and hard work: often at the expense of both mental and physical health. if you do not meet the schools expectations you’re told it’s

because you’re not working hard enough, illness at my school is treated like a mild inconvenience (aside from covid) and attendance is valued above all other things. children who are unable to focus or get overstimulated are deemed to be ‘not trying hard enough’. and other

disabled children are seen as lazy if they cannot complete work in the dedicated time. not to mention how homework is expected to always be done on time and if it’s not completed it’s because you didn’t ‘start early enough’ or you’re expected to have stayed up all night to

complete it. and this is just surface level; there are many more ways that ableism in schools is systemic. a lot of these problems also affects non-disabled children too. the system values productivity above all else and achieving a certain mark which doesn’t accurately portray

anyone’s success.
