Everyone, pls read if you're confused about CBC & one of the strategies we're advising Anne Nation use now:

The situation is complex, best explained by our 🇨🇦 team members who have a clear understanding of CBC & 🇨🇦 politics, with input from members who have some knowledge🔽
of entertainment contracts. We believe CBC may have primary control over what happens with AnnE at this point. That's why demand & profits don't matter as much as they would if Netflix was the one with the most control. CBC is a Crown Corporation, meant to serve the Canadian🔽
public, with a mandate to provide news & entertainment throughout the country. Its primary goal is NOT to become popular with the rest of the world, or make a huge profit, although those are bonuses. It's mainly paid for by 🇨🇦 taxpayers, through government funds. 🔽
The present federal govt is Liberal (headed by the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau). They have NO plan for privatization of CBC. Tait, CBC's President, was appointed to her role by the Governor General, on the advice of JT. But the present govt has been plagued by a series of🔽
scandals. Parliament is on a recess ("prorogued"), due to resume Sept. 23. An election may be called this fall. But there could also be a Cabinet reshuffling/a Liberal Party Convention, with a new Leader of the Party by then. What has already occurred is that the Opposition🔽
(the Progressive Conservatives), has elected a leader, Erin O'Toole, whose main platform has been to "defund the CBC," specifically, all Digital programming & 50% defunding of English language news & entertainment, with the goal to fully privatize by the end of his mandate,🔽
if his party wins the next election & he becomes the new PM. Many people oppose this idea, including people who otherwise might support the PC's. The lobbying group, Friends of Canadian Broadcasting, have been rallying support to oppose the plan, in the event of an election.🔽
That group has been our ally & have been heard by the CRTC, the govt body that oversees CBC's broadcast licence (which just expired) & by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Cdn Heritage, which also reviews how well CBC is fulfilling its mandate & managing its funds.🔽
Among other things, they are concerned about the potential loss of excellent programming that is produced by CBC, including AnnE, that's very popular globally. Most Canadian members of Anne Nation support the work of Friends of Canadian Broadcasting & shared their recent emails🔽
to Minister Guilbeault (Tait's boss) & to Mr. O'Toole. What ALL members of Anne Nation can do is send OUR email to Minister Guilbeault, with cc's to a variety of other, key, federal Ministers, as well as the provincial ministers of tourism/economic development for Ontario & PEI🔽
as their provinces lost revenue when filming stopped & would stand to gain the most if a renewal occurred, as COVID restrictions lift in the coming months. Other allies are also cc'd. It is a carefully crafted email, written by 6 🇨🇦 who have been active here for 9 months, that🔽
touches on a several relevant factors. Once Parliament resumes, if the situation changes, our strategy may evolve, just as it may with developments from any & all fronts, including Netflix. Until then, sending our email is likely to be the most helpful thing you can all do!
