On behalf of my many friends in Haulage, a simple thread.
Brexit.
Cabotage.
Making a small profit.
@Freight_NI will correct me if I say a small thing wrong ( I , for one, recognise experts)
1/
Hauliers carry items of value. The seller and the buyer make a profit of the load that can easily be hundreds of thousands of £'s/€'s.
The haulier gets a tiny percentage but is responsible for it all getting there intact and not degraded.
2/
Ultimately, the seller and buyer, customs agents, border agents , cops and robbers can ALL get in the way of the humble haulier.
Mistakes of others impact directly on the sad and tired driver.
Drivers are not paid well.
3/
Trucks cost a fortune, running them costs another fortune.
It is a tough existence.
Without them, there is NOTHING in supermarkets, NOTHING in factories.
It all stops.
4/
One way to eek out a living is cabotage.
eg. Paddy picks up a load in Ireland , 50% is from N.I., 50% from ROI. He/she goes to England, delivers both to Liverpool. Then He/She picks up a load for London. (that is cabotage- transporting within a single jurisdiction ).
5/
Then he delivers in London, picks up a delivery for Paris. Then a load Paris- Geneva, then Geneva -Paris, then Paris-London, then London- Liverpool, then Liverpool Ireland. It's a 6 day week across countries. Truck is always full.
6/
This ENDS in January.
UK hauliers will NOT have cabotage rights in the EU. They will NOT be able to transfer products within the EU. I assume UK will reciprocate. So, Paddy will go to Liverpool , deliver and take the ferry back.
7/
Paddy's brother will have a load for Paris will drive through UK, deliver to Paris, then have his six days in the EU.
It is not ideal. Paddy and his brother lose cabotage in 1 country. Paddy's English cousin loses it everywhere except the UK.
8/
They will all face delays at borders, spend endless hours on the phone to agents, exporter, importer, endless hours arguing with officials, endless hours in counselling.
There are NO positives for the lifeblood of the UK economy .
9/
I could add licensing issues, the limits on licences (nothing to do with EU ), I could throw in the issues of EU drivers resident in Ireland but not Irish being not part of the "common travel area" and being questioned and annoyed by the hostile environment across the pond.
