My theory is that those people who have been caught cosplaying Black, Indigenous or Latinas were so successful because people expect gross stereotypes of POC. For example, the lady who just was exposed used gigantic hoop earrings: reader, I don't wear earrings. I'm Mexican.
If u put that lady next to me, dressed in ur average dress, you'd think oh she's so much more 'Latina' because she would embody all the banana hat stereotypes people desire. That's the thing! People will be more attracted to the Disneyfied experience. They think that's 'real.'
No wonder American Dirt is one of the bestselling titles of the year! More than 400,000 copies in hardcover sold at this point, I think. Because that's what people desire.
So, as someone cannily mentioned, this woman went to class apparently in salsa outfits and dressed like she was heading to the disco in 1985 and everyone thought oh that's ok. Because she embodied a crass stereotype.
The other thing people loved, aside from the mamacita caliente imagery, seemed to be the suffering. Man, people love suffering POC! More trauma, please.
The funny thing is when you talk to people who are poor or who have had bad experiences, they don't live like they are in Les Miserables. They just *live* you know? I talked to an Uber driver who rode La Bestia and we talked about action films! Because people are *people.*
I know that sounds weird, but yes, I think it needs to be highlighted. Folks who come to sell you trauma like they're at the fucking tinaguis and it's Saturday... that's not normal.
