👋Evening All👋
This afternoon I attended a great presentation as part of @TykePsychoGeog
Meandering in an Algorithmic Autonomous Vehicular Future by @SaurabhNimsakar
Below is a wee extended thread...(1)
(2) Digital companies know more about you than you do.
Data driven transportation companies are in the business of predictions.
Whenever you’re walking along a pavement someone is quantifying your behaviour...
(3) In the near future people may be quantified as either a fast or slow walker, which could entail significant implications.
Slow walkers may be treated unfairly - considered unfit, lazy, unhealthy, 2nd class citizens...
(4) Footfall along streets within retail districts may be monitored. By analysing the speed at which people walk past shop windows/displays, consumer interests could be ascertained and products adjusted accordingly
(5) Population herding has already been introduced via games such as PokĂ©mon Go, where people are ‘guided’ towards certain locations to catch a PokĂ©mon.
More + more we shall see companies paying tech + gaming developers to include their stores etc to increase footfall + profits
(6) Where do Psychogeographers, wanderers and meanderers fit in the techno-deterministic future?
How might we meander in an autonomous algorithmic future?
Jaywalking is already deemed illegal in a number of countries. A fundamental human right has been criminalised
(7) Autonomous vehicles are already capable of observing individual behaviours; facial recognition, WiFi connections, bodily movement. Even our walking gait could be used to identify us.
Psychogeographers need to be cautious in the future. We could be considered deviant by others
(8) Thanks @SaurabhNimsakar for a really interesting and thought-provoking talk, and to my fellow audience members for asking such pertinent questions.
Really looking forward to the rest of @TykePsychoGeog Festival this weekend 🙂
