OKAY SO I finally compiled all the little things I've read/figured out about Falling by HS. A THREAD that took a VERY long time to make, so please read and RT!
After all the discussion about how the ship tattooed on H's arm is possibly inspired by the Royal Louis (the ship named after King Louis XIV, AKA the sun king), someone pointed out the ship painted on Harry's piano in Falling.
You can actually see the ship very clearly on the behind the scenes set photos. The piano was custom painted for this video. So was the rest of the room!
The floor has a similar theme as the Beachwood Cafe's floor in LA. He mentions the cafe in the song "the coffee is out at the Beachwood cafe and it kills me cause I know we've run out of things we can say"
A few photos of the artist, (Jayne Morgan) at work. Notice the fish and the the general nautical theme. While talking about the music video, H mentions "there's nothing that makes you feel more human than the ocean" while talking about being in water for the MV
The details are barely visible in the MV. I believe the ship is the only detail you actually can see, and it's only in one shot. The color of the walls is a VERY SPECIFIC SHADE OF BLUE. Wanna guess the name of the shade? The need for a specific shade of blue is a theme with H.
In an interview with GQ, the designer of H's lights up suit said H insisted "it needs to be in this shade of blue; I can't tell you much else." Want one guess which of the following samples presented they actually went with? Hint: think Louis blue.
You probably guessed right...
Back to the MV, he looked strikingly younger the exact moment he went under water. It's incredible, and I'm convinced they edited it to make him look younger. "I'm falling AGAIN" - this imagery seems to represent drowning in old emotions and feeling like his younger self felt
In an interview with Entercom, H talks about how the water coming from the piano is ironic because writing these songs is what helps but can also hurt. "I'm well aware I write too many songs about you"
Coming to the actual lyrics, this song took a bit to make sense to me. I really thought the song was just about emotionally falling and feeling down. In interviews, harry says it's about "falling into a bad place...being sad about what you lost"
While you can read falling as "falling into despair" (even if that isn't very coherent), it actually makes more sense to look at all of it: "what if I'm down, what if I'm out, what if I'm someone you won't talk about. I'm falling again"
The what if's and the yearning in his words makes it clear that it's him holding out hope for someone. This song is married to the hope/yearning in Golden, MMITH, FTDT, to be so lonely. It's the same theme over and over again, and reflected in "I write too many songs about you".
Going back to "what if I'm down, what if I'm out", I think the song makes more sense if you read that that as "what if I'm down to do this, what if I'm out and proud... Because I'm falling in for you again". (just my interpretation of his words)
A very intentional imagery in the MV is in the second chorus after he says the coffee is out at the Beachwood cafe, the windows open, letting the sunlight in. This feels married to the sun references throughout the album.
If you've made it so far, thank you! I started on my ramble and it went on a lot longer than I thought! Let me know if I missed anything!
Over the course of the song, you see him slowly drowning in his emotions (the water) flowing through his music (the piano), and then he stays submerged through the rest of it. This is a beautiful representation of him still being in that state, underwater and in pain.
