You've probably seen posts on social media in the past few days claiming X number of people have died by suicide in a week/month.

It has created problems for people living with mental health issues and suicide ideation - and those who work to help them https://jrnl.ie/5192698
There is a delicate balance between shining a light on mental health issues, reducing stigma, and not creating problems and pathways.

The influence and impact of news reporting is a heavy responsibility

Of course, even one suicide is one too many - many people will look at this and say it doesn't matter if the figures are wrong. But it really does. We know from working with organisations about reporting of suicide how much it matters. https://twitter.com/HeadlineIreland/status/1301827669433241601
According to one person today: "We've been fighting a tsunami of false reporting all week."

Think about why they have to fight that - and what they could have been doing instead.

Most people shared this information from a *really* good and decent place. It is horrific to think of that many people struggling.

Mis/dis-information is often created to make you feel like that by people with different - and not always sound - agendas.
These particular claims were compared to Covid-19 death numbers in many of the posts.

They were also used to undermine the media and health service - with a lot of 'not a mention anywhere' comments.
This is our advice to spot those red flags.
