Something I predicted about pandemic but kept to myself: turns out my gut/hunch was right.

During the first couple months of pandemic, a reporter asked me to elaborate on my impressions of public health leaders. But esp my criticisms of Dr. de Villa.

I was rating her very low.
I offered some generalisms. But felt hesitant to be quoted in a publication.

*And I wasn't afraid offending anyone.* I opine freely and honestly refusing to calculate for careerism etc: I loathe kiss-assery.

That's probably the ONE obvious thing about me by now, right?

😆😂
The reason?

The people who struggle out of the gate - if they are committed and sincere about the mission - will be the ones who stand tall later.

I just knew Dr. De Villa was going to dazzle us later. That she's a learner and self-corrects. I don't know her but could feel that
My gut told me if I go on record in a publication about my harsh criticisms of Dr. De Villa, which is even more forever and egg on your face than social media, in few months she would prove me totally wrong.

And sure enough, she did exactly that.
She started pandemic for me as the weakest of our high profile major PH leaders, just as or almost as weak as the ON CMOH.

Today she's my favourite, at least on par with Dr. Henry, and lately, often even exceeding Henry.

Those are my feelings about her today anyway.
Today she is assertive.

She has the aura of authority she was missing early on bc she consented to a Mayor walking all over her role.

She was too close. Even parroting his (counter productive) reactions. Appearing too eager to fall into line and less an authority unto herself.
But that's not Dr. De Villa today.

She's in command. Even when the Mayor is once again improperly using her stage.

Early, the Mayor behaved as MC controlling her presser and messages.

Today she feels like the MC. The Mayor is a guest. As it should be.
Her messages today are solidly her messages. Public Health messages.

She's using first principles of epidemic mgnt which is counter intuitive for politicians.

It's not coercive. Instead she seeks our consent in a 2 way framed message. She's being herself which is Public Health.
And lately at key moments, the people's Medical Officer. The people's Doctor and advocate.

She's been choosing to give us the pure Public Health and science position instead of the political position, even taking risks opposing prov policies of a, for the moment, popular premier
She's even standing taller than others in her conviction and eloquence across the country.

I look forward to her pressers, like I do with Henry.

We can sense now that the real Dr. De Villa is standing up.

A long way of saying, glad I didn't do that intervu😆.
And...

LISTEN TO YOUR GUT.
