Teachers rally outside @bklynfriends to protest what they call the progressive Quaker school’s union-busting tactics.
Teacher Jesse Phillips-Fein rejects @bklynfriends argument that a union conflicts with its Quaker values. “They didn’t use the Quaker process to lay off 40 of my colleagues.”
. @JabariBrisport tells the crowd the @bklynfriends said she was too busy to discuss teachers contracts. “She’s not to bust to union bust.”
. @BKBoroHall arrives to support the teachers. “This school was trying to destroy the union behind our backs,” Adam said. “This is clearly a Donald Trump play.”
Rising 9th grader George Atkins, 14, came to support the union because he lost so many music teachers he valued in recent layoffs. “It’s really worrying about the future the school.”
. @bklynfriends petitioned to disband the union based on a Trump-appointed National Labor Relations Board decision. The connection is not lost among the protestors.
“Brooklyn Friends School is home,” said Sue Aaronson, a teacher of 39 years. She wants a union for the school’s sake, which has seen rapid administration turnover. “There is no party at BFS, there is the union, and the union is us.”
