For a while I have come to think of current period as a sort of "Destruction of Reconstruction, Part 2." This Thread will closely follow Michael Fellman's "Blood Redemption: The Counterrevolutionary White-Terrorist Destruction of Reconstruction," a text I often use in class 1/
The Redeemers loathed any & all attempts at political organization by Blacks. They were terrified at the idea of a Black uprising (an uprising that existed only in their feverish minds) & used violence (which they saw as defensive & legitimate) to seize power in the mid 1870s 2/
These fears were fueled by deep, lingering humiliation so many whites felt following the defeat of the Confederacy. Shame & humiliation are central to the story of how white Southerners would come to see their use of terroristic violence as legitimate, righteous & redemptive 3/
Nothing was quite as "humiliating" to these white men as idea of white women "eloping" with Black men. Such "insults," as well as any attempt by Blacks to organize politically, were seen as signs of an impending violent uprising, thus justifying "defensive" white violence 4/
These rumors of a Black uprising led to extraordinary violence on the part of white Redeemers. Their victims were dehumanized in every possible way. Tortured. Dismembered. The kind of violence we would call terrorism today. It was all perpetrated in name of self-defense 5/
Elections were looming, and the press played its part in enflaming the passions of white Redeemers. A central objective of this terrorist campaign by white supremacists was to exclude Blacks from the public sphere & to lay claim to any all public spaces 6/
The control of public places and the control of political power were intimately intertwined. And so white Supremacists organized wild, extravagant rallies to celebrate white dominance and (the 2 being intimately related) the destruction of Black rights. 7/
These extravagant celebrations went hand in hand with the ever present threat of political violence against Blacks. These rallies, non-violent celebrations of freedom or community on the surface, were a central element of the white supremacist terrorist campaign 8/
Throughout, white leaders engaged in a "spurious & complicated protection racket," insisting that they were ushering a new ear of peace while constantly engaging in & inciting extraordinary violence (terrorism) through their various militias 9/
White southerners were humiliated on battle field & by Black people daring to B free. Their terrorism destroyed reconstruction. Jim Crow was maintained thru terrorism. To many, MLK/Obama/Kap were insults. The last straw. Are we seeing the Destruction of Reconstruction, Part 2?END
