With all the talk on TV about "Patriot Prayer", "Proud Boys", "Boogaloo Bois" let me get real frank with you....The monsters are not being talked about. In the coming weeks, I will have no choice but to slow walk journalists through some of the darker sides of the web.
In the work our team does online, we harvest terabytes worth of the worst propaganda being viewed by young people who are diving further and further into NeoNazi, White Supremacist and hardcore anti-Feminist violent materials that would leave most journalists unable to sleep.
As we discuss threats of violence around the pending elections, you will hear about militia groups, "Boogaloo Bois", and QAnon cult crazies. I showed a video to a producer a couple of days back and she was shocked. It was very disturbing. I had to make sure she got the truth.
I could tell the reaction to a threatening video was intense, so I said, "if it helps, I can send videos that make that feel like fuzzy kittens"
I have spent too many years watching the worst bile of violence people can see, from ISIS to Nazi attacks unsuspecting targets.
I keep lots of that chatter off this timeline, deliberately as we work to identify threats, extremist levels and sources. It isn't good policy to let the real web monsters get oxygen. However, with every day that goes by, we see them getting more and more brazen.
Newsflash: there are Americans (not bots, not Russians, but Americans) hell bent on murdering other Americans in the name of their racist ideology. These people are posting daily about their desire for war against "communists", "libtards", and "Antifa"
Newsflash: the same Americans hell bent on killing other Americans digest extreme amounts of conspiracy theory driven rhetoric then go out in public, putting tags of their Nazi beliefs across the country. They then go back to their web lairs to brag of these activities.
Newsflash: US law enforcement has little they can do until a line is crossed invoking probable cause due to our 4th Amendment. This leaves the research on private firms and citizens. These monsters know this and relish in their freedom to push the line as far as they can.
When you get the moment, thank the hundreds of people who scout these portals daily for the worst content. They're doing you a service that you aren't supposed to have to think about while you go on about your lives. That's the result these colleagues work to preserve.
