/ Our entire company got the last 10 Fridays off, as "rest & refuel" days. Since #Fridaythoughts is trending, I thought I will share my gratitude. I work at @Shopify , a company that helps entrepreneurs and takes pride in making commerce better for everyone. (thread)
/Getting 10 "long weekends" allowed me to get plenty of rest. Our 'digital by default' aka remote team works across timezones which sometimes means odd work hours. The fact that my employer empathized with that & allowed me to get plenty of sleep is something I truly appreciate.
/Apart from sleep, I also got an opportunity to do things outside of work that made me happy. I have been horrible at work-life balance in the past. Getting 10 Fridays off helped me get that balance, allowed me to spend more time with my loved ones, and turn off work thoughts.
/If you are one of those who think work is life, let me tell you that I have lived that for a decade. But zooming out of work and doing things outside of it, is crucial if you dont want to burn out. I have lived life like its short, I now realise that its long. Long AF.
/...And I have to balance my work & life to run this journey like a marathon. Going forward I am going to try and keep Fridays for my creative work. I am going to avoid interactions on slack, phone and video conferences. Self time is so important.
/ I can't believe I'm saying this, but am actually happy that Fridays are now back at Shopify. The last 10 Fridays away from work has now allowed me to understand & appreciate the last day of the week much better in my life. Thank you @shopify
