We talk about the media a lot but really, so much of what we see and read is not news but advertisements.

Today in #MemoriMediaMerdeka we explore the relationship between our Malaysian media and advertising!

As always, thank you @designarkib for your wonderful materials!
1. The media is almost entirely dependent on ads to be financially sustainable.

2. It& #39;s almost impossible for media outlets to survive on subscribers alone, even with a loyal and large following.

3. This reliance on ad revenue has often made business departments extremely powerful, leading to clashes between the business and content arms of outlets.

4. In addition, since the viability of the entire business is based on ads, media has sometimes become sensationalist - anything to get more readers.

5. Now that online media is dominant, and fewer people pay for content, this reliance on ads has become even greater.

6. In turn, the online advertising landscape is overwhelmingly dominated by Google and Facebook, which have the power to make or break your news outlet.

7. When we don& #39;t pay for content, we pay in other ways: our privacy, the quality of reporting, and a drive towards clickbait.

That& #39;s all we have for today, folks!
