Seems pretty clear from this account that when authorities moved in to arrest him, the suspect was 'killed during the encounter'.

Seems pretty clear what happened.
Violent extremist who cold-bloodedly executed an unarmed person fled to another state to avoid authorities, and a federal unit located him and moved to take him into custody and he like drew a gun on them and got shot dead.
