When I went to the big Acadian reunion in 2004 in Clare (which celebrated 400 years of acadian-ness), my favourite part was the Cajuns who showed up with giant kitchens in their trailers to cook shrimp étouffée for us. We survived the expulsion and with great food to boot!
One of the most moving things I did when I visited Louisiana in 2016 was visit a very Acadian parish. I saw the fresh flowers and cried???
(I’m trying to remember where it was, but all I know is we went to a wonderful Cajun restaurant for lunch and then this church and I had a LOT of feelings)
Acadians/Cajuns finally got their own damn heritage minute last year
Et aussi en français
Anyway I know I harp and harp on this so just one last time: the Acadians were torn from their homes, separated from their families, mostly/many (60%) killed in the boats that took them away from Nova Scotia
But we still exist, even in diaspora, even in my kid
It makes me unbelievably proud to know that even my distant ancestors were pacifists who refused to participate in any kind of war, be it English, French, whatever. Us trashy seaboard dingdongs transcend!
Now I want to move back to Nova Scotia lol
