Why the fox eye trend is offensive; a thread
I would just like to clarify that I am East-Asian, and I really do think racism towards Asians is normalized
The fox eye trend is a popular beauty trend that many models, beauty gurus, and celebrities have been participating in. The trend is to put your fingers on your temples and pull back so your eyes are more slanted. But this gesture is very very problematic.
This is because East-asians have always been mocked for our slanted eyes with this exact same gesture. Fact is, what we are shamed for, is now a trend because it conveniently fits your aesthetic.
While it may not come from a place of ill-intent, it’s still appropriating our features. It’s ignorant and insensitive due to the discrimination we have faced because of our eyes.
Many of us grew up having our ethnic features mocked. Resulting in us being insecure and self-hate for our eyes. The fox eye trend fails to recognize the trauma we have faced and is racially insensitive.
You may say “oh take this as a compliment, it’s a beauty trend” The thing is, our eyes never really ‘transitioned’ into being ‘beautiful’. We’re still mocked for our eyes. But suddenly it’s ‘beauty’ when you do it?
Please understand how this trend is problematic and needs to stop.
Also for clarification, the fox eye make-up is fine, but the actual hand gesture isn’t.
