This is my biggest fear about the movies right now... Everyone’s already shooting w/o pandemic insurance, gambling on the hope the stars won’t get sick. That gamble will eventually lose people enough money that insurance prices will skyrocket and indies will get priced out. https://twitter.com/daveanthony/status/1301634292494209024
Then major studios will be the only ones who can afford to make movies. Consolidation around major corporations will continue. And small movies, and new artists with new voices will be seen as a liability not worth investing in.
Then all of the sudden independent movies are back in the 80s/90s. Not altogether a bad thing... But there was no TikTok back then. Prestige television basically didn’t exist. Indie movies were a viable commercial product that didn’t have an endless steam of competition.
But now... who the fuck knows. I hope I’m catastrophizing. I just have a really bad feeling that it’s about to get 100x harder for young filmmakers to find money that isn’t their own. And that means so many artists & art we will never see, and the death of an entire marketplace.
And I just can’t help but put almost all of the blame on the president. It 10000% did not need to be like this. And now it is, because of him.
