Our BYU freshman daughter just tested positive for COVID. 6 months of staying COVID-free in Park City—Utah’s first “hot spot,” only to get it six days after going to Provo, in spite of following all the rules and protocols. I’m angry. 1/

While I appreciate BYU’s strict rules on wearing masks in class, I’m angry I saw no protocols in place to enforce mask-wearing rules in & around dorms. While moving her in, I saw packs of girls walking thru dorms maskless and huge groups of maskless kids congregating outside 2/

Never did I see an RA or any BYU employee stopping to educate/remind the kids about the inportance of mask wearing and social distancing. When I called BYU to express my concern, I was shuffled from one student to another answering calls at the various departments I tried. 3/

Each of the student operators I talked to, including the one in the Housing Department, told me that masks weren’t required in the dorms. It wasn’t until I talked to the student operator for Risk Management that she confirmed that yes, students ARE required to wear in dorms. 4/

I shared my concern that I observed a lot of kids not following that rule and no education/enforcing of that protocol by RAs. She said she’d let her manager know and that was it. 5/

My daughter told me that a lot of the kids in the dorms that have been testing positive went to the Fuego dance club in Provo last weekend (she did not). THEY WENT TO AN INDOOR DANCE CLUB IN A PANDEMIC. PROVO ALLOWS DANCE CLUBS TO BE OPEN IN A PANDEMIC. 6/

I’m furious at those who somehow think they’re immune to getting COVID who’re breaking rules & ruining it for those who’re doing what they should. I’m furious at students who went to indoor dance club in a pandemic. I’m furious at any parents who may not have taught kids better 8

I’m furious at Provo @mayorkaufusi for vetoing the @provocouncil’s mask mandate that allowed that dance club to stay open through the weekend. I’m furious at the anti-maskers in Provo whom she gave into. 9/

Most of all, I’m furious we have a POTUS who has never taken this illness seriously. I’m furious we have a POTUS who has politicized maskwearing. I’m furious we have a POTUS who sets example of not wearing masks and holding huge public rallies/events during a pandemic. End/
