um. y’all. contracting with a prison is bad no matter what you’re selling...
no one should be able to make a profit off of incarcerated folks, for one. but also, the food would apparently be sold in commissary—not served as the food they receive in the cafeteria. meaning not everyone would even be able to enjoy the food.
incarcerated folks deserve more than empty platitudes like “soul food,” especially since that type of service would only be approved by a prison seeking to appease inmates and push a narrative that suggests they actually care about the subjects they keep in cages.
it isn’t just prison guards that are the reason for why prisons are abominable. the prison industrial complex runs off of the many people and businesses that invest in its maintenance—that includes Black contractors selling soul food. LOL.
we lie to ourselves if we believe that the material needs and conditions of those on the inside change simply because someone brings along some better tasting food (that, again, many won’t even have access to).

the conditions only become worse with more money invested.
