Amazing reporting by @JeffreyGoldberg. Incredible. Trump asked “Who were the good guys in this war?” about World War II.

At the grave of John Kelly’s son in Arlington @realDonaldTrump said to him: “ I don’t get it. What was in it for them?”
Trump said of Gen. Dunford: “He seems like a smart guy. Why did he join the military?” @20committee @LFredenhall @AV8intheblue @afrosabi @MuellerSheWrote @soldatliberte @JarBomb
“In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.”

!!!
This source is clearly Jim Mattis:
Pretty important to say @JeffreyGoldberg has four separate sources who were present when @realDonaldTrump disparaged the war dead.

“Trump... did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day.”
Adding insult to injury, let’s not forget @mikepompeo was there and slated to go to the cemetery for Memorial Day, but he, although a veteran himself, couldn’t be bothered to attend either.

What a pair of losers.
My informed guess is that three of the four firsthand sources were Dunford, Kelly, and a @uscoastguard veteran named Zach Fuentes, who was on the trip and was Kelly’s Chief of Staff and was in the room. Fuentes has been a named source in prior stories about this trip.
Update: @JimLaPorta has a second source confirming the story. His sources are current, not former, @DeptofDefense officials - which is truly fascinating. https://twitter.com/jimlaporta/status/1301702233537605632
