TW // ANXIETY

things NOT to say to someone with anxiety.

A THREAD:
“oh here we go again”

personally i’ve heard this one a lot by teachers, it makes me more anxious, i feel like people are angry at me for something i can’t control. it makes me feel guilty and scared. it’s not a nice feeling.
“calm down”

it’s frustrating because these words do nothing to help during a panic attack. it’s like you’re expecting us to relax on command like some sort of dog. it invalidates our feelings and insinuates that we choose to be anxious.
“you’ll just have to get over it”

anxiety isn’t something you can just get over. this is so horrible??? it genuinely makes me feel unsupported and ashamed..
“i get anxious too”

just because you have experienced nervousness doesn’t mean you can relate to someone who has actually got anxiety. it’s simply just a false comparison.
anxiety consumes someone’s life, this isn’t a cute little passing emotion.
“it’s not that big of a deal”

when you have anxiety, EVERYTHING is a big deal. whatever that person is worrying about is clearly very important/scary to them. it’s not up to you to decide what is and what isn’t a big deal to that person.
“you aren’t trying hard enough”

this one boils my piss. saying this to someone who has anxiety is incredibly disrespectful. every person with anxiety is trying their best. even while working on helping themselves, they can still be very very prone to panic attacks+
and telling them they aren’t trying hard enough can cause them to give up hope. it’s really upsetting and mentally deteriorating for us.
“are you okay?”

i know it’s a go to saying or whatever but when you can clearly see someone shaking, crying and unable to breathe properly, then the answer is obvious and when you keep repeating it, it gets annoying.
end of thread <3

when it comes to people with anxiety, you don’t want to shame them, or ignore their struggles and suffering. you want to comfort them and make them feel safe. please reassure them that you’re here for them and offer your help.
