Since everyone is losing their minds about the QB competition, and half of them spending an inordinate amount of time hedging to the point where they cannot possibly ever be wrong no matter who starts...I have decided to look at the positives re: Bears (long thread)
Skill position improvements: biggest positive we’ve heard out of camp is the TE position, particularly Kmet and Graham. I did a thread on why it was so important have both (linked here) so bears could run in more 12—a better fit for Nagy’s O + Mitch/Foles https://twitter.com/bshulkes/status/1254035083922735105?s=21
I also did a thread on how Graham still has ability. Him, Kmet & Harris, who is a traditional Y TE, give CHI roster flexibility to be near tops of 12 personnel like PHI & KC were vs bottom like last yr. It also opens up a more physical run style (1/2 here) https://twitter.com/bshulkes/status/1241788821626290177?s=21
This quietly happened yesterday during the bickering, Leno gave some insights on the O failure. At 3:45 he talks how they want to be “aggressive & attacking” coming of ball, didn’t do LY. didnt have personnel to at TE in seams/blocking, speed WR, or line
Bears have the TE group that can attack seams & as disguised/better run blockers. It sounds James Daniels has put on more mass to be physical, and Idefi is far better than whatever bears did at RG LY. Castillo said himself “We don't want to be thinking...let's be physical.”
So bears improved the TE group massively, o line some small and nice upgrades, but what about the WR group? Well they traded out Taylor Gabriel (still a FA) for more Miller shares
, and added true downfield speed in Ginn (vet) and Mooney (R)
; Nagy also said 17 had a huge camp

Bears finally have team speed to stretch field/seams and this also opens up QB run lanes again...Bears were last in team speed and the worst TE group in football, they fixed both... For more of my checklist items plays see back in December https://twitter.com/bshulkes/status/1209197131535462406?s=21
So in my mind the TE group, line, WR room all better, at RB the only real tweak is Mike Davis our (for awhile now) and Nagy deciding to correctly use Patterson—these are all upgrades on offense. Of course, Trubisky (hurt labrum)/Foles is a better QB room than Trubisky/Chase
On defense the Bears exchanged Floyd, Prince and Ha-Ha for Quinn, Jaylon and Gipson. My thoughts on Jaylon are in the Kmet thread—upgrade, Quinn is in the below reddit chart (I highlighted floyd), and Gipson/Ha-Ha is a push
The bears did lose Goldman which will hurt, but they picked up Jenkins and if you read Jahns (below) it does seem like Bilal is ready to build back after a disappointing sophomore season, here and LB depth are only small downgrades I see for the bears https://twitter.com/adamjahns/status/1300058109784870916?s=21
So do I think the bears can contend with Trubisky—yes I do. Why do I? 1. The coaching is better (didn’t touch on that) 2. The personnel allows Nagy to be better as well as QBs play in a system that has a chance 3. The defense is terrifying top 3 stuff....yeah, they can contend.
