A few thoughts on my arrest yesterday @XRebellionUK @xr_cambridge
Firstly, thank you to Constable Allen and his colleagues from Charing Cross and @MPSSutton for treating me with such kindness and care. I'm sorry if I hurt your backs by making you pick me up. But floppy is all the rage @XRebellionUK
Secondly, I know how immensely privileged I am - middle class, middle-aged, (very) white, secure person, without health problems, recipient of multiple cups of tea courtesy of @MPSSutton, now back home and listening to @BBCRadio3
Another aspect of that privilege is that I'm a historian. And although I often feel like 'I don't know much about history', I have just about grasped - from a few salient historical examples - that you have to break an egg to make an omelette.
We don't have much time left in which to make that (obviously vegan) omelette.
It is so obvious that this is the most urgent crisis in historical memory.
I'm not a strategist, nor a politician nor a scientist, but I can see that the climate and ecological emergency has to move to the top of the list NOW.
I'm not brimming over with hope. I'm afraid Parliament Square doesn't generate much of that. But I'm certainly prepared to make a nuisance of myself just on the off chance that collective action can make a difference.
Oh, and while I've got you, @DanielZeichner, BACK the frigging BILL
You can follow @MaryLavenCam.
