rant thread: my thoughts on the song trust fund baby bc it’s literally wdw’s little things
FIRST OF ALL i really like this song. it was one of the first i’d heard by why don’t we like 2 years ago. i’m not really a stan of the band anymore but i still like some of their music
my biggest problem with tfb is that it’s SO deceiving. it’s another one of those songs promoting the “i’m not like other girls” stereotype
i’m sick and tired of men making music (or really men doing anything) that pits women against each other. it’s 2020 like can we leave this in the past???
WHO CARES if you’re a girl who likes to “shop until you drop on the town.” we already shame women enough without making negative connotations about SHOPPING
the line “i don’t want a girl who take selfies, want her make-up free” is SO problematic for so many reasons.
first of all, if u feel good about how u look, take a damn selfie!! no one should feel bad about wanting to take a selfie.
now this is the even worse part. NO ONE should have any opinion on a girl wearing makeup. that’s her choice. and this line implies that girls should use/not use makeup based on the preference of boys. like, no????? wear makeup for URSELF if U FEEL GOOD.
type-casting girls by their appearance/how much money they have or an inclination to go shopping is sooooo harmful, especially when your fan base is primarily made up of teenage girls
ed sheeran actually wrote the song, so it’s not necessarily wdw’s fault that it’s so harmful. and perhaps they didn’t mean for it to be so offensive. but in this day and age we have to do everything in our power to SUPPORT women, not pit them against each other
at the end of the day, i like this song. unfortunately i have to block out many of the lyrics or else i can’t enjoy it.
end of thread😁 thanks for listening to my rant xo
