To commemorate the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., I’m going to use this thread to share little things I love about all the Mario games I play this month. 1/x https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/1301505239930089473
First up, I’m going to play through Super Mario All-Stars for the Super NES, which you can play today with a Nintendo Switch Online membership. It has all the original NES / Famicom Super Mario Bros. games with upgraded 16-bit graphics. 2/x
One of the small details I love about the changes to the first Super Mario Bros. games is how they added more visible snow to levels, starting at 3-1. (Original on the left, All-Stars on the right.) 3/x
Another cute little upgrade to Super Mario Bros. is the greeting you receive from Toad at each castle. In the original Super Mario Bros. it’s always the iconic solitary Toad until you beat the game. 4/x
In Super Mario All-Stars, there are more Toads the further you get into the game. The castle at 2-4 has two Toads crammed into a bag!
By the time you beat the castle in 7-4, you get an entire mini Toad brigade of seven little cuties. 6/x
I love the original Super Mario Bros. so much that I tried a blindfolded speedrun for a fundraiser this year. If I can dig up a clip I’ll post it later. In the meantime, here’s a photo! 7/x
The highlight of the Super Mario All-Stars collection for me was The Lost Levels. I’d heard rumors of a different sequel to Super Mario Bros. for years, but being able to finally try them was so exciting. I think it’s an elegant game with a great sense of humor. 8/x
Playing with the Rewind Feature is a great way to dig into the practical jokes of The Lost Levels. Take this mushroom for example. It teases you into practicing to nail that mid-air grab. But when you finally get it right, there’s the punishment on the land. Too funny! 9/x
Another fun thing about The Lost Levels is how it builds on mechanics in the original Super Mario Bros. Take this classic section of 1-2, where you can’t reach the fire flower, but you can do a stylish wall bounce to get an extra lift... 10/x
In The Lost Levels, it incorporates the optional stylish wall bounce flair you could exhibit in the original game, but makes it a requisite for progression. You have to play stylishly to proceed. 11/x
Another cute addition in #SuperMario All-Stars is this little hidden picture of Mario added to the background layer of the bonus rooms. Break the bricks to say hi. ✌️ 12/x
My absolute favorite level in #SuperMario Bros.: The Lost Levels is B-4. In the original, it could only be reached by beating the game eight times! And it’s hard as heck. Look at some of the precision it demands from you. 13/x
