Driving home from the SO’s tonight and I’ve got myself riled up.

So I’m going to rant about the issues of being a male in a Primary School (but it may not be what you think)...
So most people when they hear of issues of being a male primary school teacher it’s normally about being more vulnerable to accusations and lack of male buddies
While both are issues (the vulnerability is an issue for both male and females), my biggest issue is the Stereotypes that being a male brings to the role
Firstly, I hate that the stereo type of ‘so is the career plan to become a headteacher?’

I hate the fact that as a male, people (in and out of the profession) think I’ll ‘make a good headteacher’ or ‘see my career going that way’ or even worse ‘you’ll be head in 10 years’
If I’m honest, I don’t want to be a head teacher. Some people are great at it, some are not designed for it. I do think I’m in the latter.

I love teaching, and i do believe that head teachers don’t teach enough. I want to teach as long as I can, so I don’t want to be a head.
In my 5 years of working as a teacher, I’ve only worked under female head teachers, and they are excellent at their jobs.

People shouldn’t look at me and see that just because I’m a teacher and a male, that is where my career is headed.
Next thing that really bugs me (and it’s a massive bug) is ‘they need a good man to sort them out’ or ‘they could do with a good male model’.
This really grinds my teeth.

Why, just because someone is a male, should they have any more (or less) impact as a female teacher?

Some of the most influential and model teachers I have worked with have been females.
And I hate. I hate that as a man I should be ‘scary’.

I would hate for the children to look at me, as a teacher, and think that I’m someone not to approach because I’m scary.

Respect and discipline can and should be achieved by any teacher reguardless of their gender.
same with role models.

People are always quick to pick out children who are missing a male in their life and say that I’ll be a good role model for them.

I want to be a good role model for ALL CHILDREN.

I also don’t want to take away from a good job the mother or carer does
And with subjects.

Why is it seen that men are stereotypically good at PE?

The best PE teacher I’ve ever had was a woman.

I would hate to think that there are female teachers out there who aren’t being able to show off their talent in subjects due to lack of opportunities
Now I don’t want people to read this and think I’m trying to play the victim.
All this also has an impact on female teachers as well.
I think once we get these stereotypes out of school, it would be a much better work.
It may even be a factor in the lack of males 🤷🏻
You may disagree with me, you may agree.
If you’ve got this far, fair play to you.
I just needed to get this out of my system.

Primary Teachers are heroes, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or feet size.

Hope everyone’s week has been great so far.
