Rice is not an addiction when it is cheaper than most locally produced foods. It is a necessity. https://twitter.com/suleimana/status/1301476321156046850
When you're making a point from the lens of the middle class, rice is an option. When you drill down to the average man, rice is one of the cheapest sources of fuel for the average person. People need energy to survive, esp given how hard they have to work to earn $ for food.
It is morally wrong to suggest that the poorest Nigerians pay more for food at whatever supposed benefit. That is a crime! People already spend 80% of their income on food and are malnourished.
Also, who said food security is only achieved by local production. If that were the case, we'd have all starved to dead th by now in Africa. Thank God we can import wheat from the USA to feed 100s of millions of people, or import maize so we can grow chickens
If we can't grow chickens cheaply, eggs, the cheapest form of protein and fats, become more expensive. The poor consume less. Fats and protien are vital for brain and muscle development. Stunting is real. Please, please please. Don't throw "self sufficiency" around anyhow....
I can keep going...
