This is fucked up and extremely harmful. Don't tell stories that aren't yours to tell, sure. But if the story you are telling has BIPOC characters in it, TELL IT. This entire thread is a prohibition against white people including non-white characters in our work at all. https://twitter.com/findmereading/status/1300138895972208645
God, the "only write characters from marginalised groups you are personally a member of" is such a brainworm. Holy fuck. Like, yes, sure, you definitely should not appropriate experiences from BIPOC people for your writing. That is not the same as writing non-white characters.
Do we really have to get into the difference between "the story you are telling" and "the characters in that story"? Or will it be enough to point out that following the advice in that thread would lead you to white writers /erasing all BIPOC characters/ from their stories?
The supposedly helpful, antiracist rubric being handed out there and apparently taken on board by at least 17K people, if followed, would lead to the exact same fucking situation with erasure of marginalised identities as we had in the goddamn '50s.
