Southgate just needs to be simple for England to win the tournament.
Should go like this:
------------Kane
Sancho Foden Sterling
-------Rice Henderson
Saka Gomez Maguire TAA
-----------Pickford
It's very clear cut. Let me explain why.
Should go like this:
------------Kane
Sancho Foden Sterling
-------Rice Henderson
Saka Gomez Maguire TAA
-----------Pickford
It's very clear cut. Let me explain why.
1) There is very little time for coaching systems in international football. As a result, it's very difficult for attackers to make partnerships. As a result, there are fewer goals. Essentially, teams with 2 defensive midfielders win tournaments.
2) All of the England front 4 are tactical geniuses. They can all drop deep, play between the lines and be a threat left, right + centre. Very little time needed for them to develop partnerships. With those footballing brains, they will break down teams easily.
3) Trent playing a bit deeper and narrower adds another midfielder to the mix; the position where England are sorely lacking. It adds passing ability and defensive stability. It allows Saka to essentially play as a wingback in possession.
4) This team would probably have some of the best fitness and work-rate in the tournament. Defend in a basic 4-4-2.
----------Foden Kane
Sancho Rice Henderson Sterling
Saka Gomez Maguire TAA
------------Pickford
----------Foden Kane
Sancho Rice Henderson Sterling
Saka Gomez Maguire TAA
------------Pickford
Having Rice and Henderson in the pivot adds leadership. They would make sure that Saka and Sancho on the left hand side are disciplined. Saka is another tactical genius anyway. Defensive midfield is possibly the most important position to have leadership. They are the core.
5) The team can press high in this system and maintain a high work-rate over 90. Pen teams back.
6) 4-2-3-1/4-4-2 is one of the best systems for direct play. You could lump the ball down to Kane, who's probably the best technical CF in the world. If you can draw pressure and play long, you have a 4v4 with Kane, Sterling, Foden and Sancho with the opposing back 4.
7) Both Foden and TAA can make third midfielders.
----------------Kane
Sancho Sterling
--------Foden Henderson
-----------------Rice
Saka Gomez Maguire TAA
---------------Pickford
----------------Kane
Sancho Sterling
--------Foden Henderson
-----------------Rice
Saka Gomez Maguire TAA
---------------Pickford
-------------------Kane
Saka Sancho Foden Sterling
-------Henderson TAA
-------------------Rice
------------Gomez Maguire
-----------------Pickford
Saka Sancho Foden Sterling
-------Henderson TAA
-------------------Rice
------------Gomez Maguire
-----------------Pickford

Saka Sancho Foden Sterling
-------Henderson TAA
-------------------Rice
------------Gomez Maguire
-----------------Pickford
Saka Sancho Foden Sterling
-------Henderson TAA
-------------------Rice
------------Gomez Maguire

You can build from a back 3 like this and use Trent in the build-up like:
Sancho Kane Foden
Saka Henderson Rice Sterling
-------Gomez Maguire TAA
-----------------Pickford
Sancho Kane Foden
Saka Henderson Rice Sterling
-------Gomez Maguire TAA
-----------------Pickford
Switch of play from Trent to Sancho high and wide. Saka overlapping, Sterling hitting the far post, with Kane and Foden attacking the box like this.
Saka----------Kane Sterling
-----------------<Foden>
Saka----------Kane Sterling
-----------------<Foden>
Just showing you, there are a million and one systematic manoeuvres these players can execute and remember naturally. They play in these type of systems for their clubs.
