Why #SleeplessOnNetflix is the most relevant and captivating coming-of-age Filipino indie movie for millennials... This movie just gets us!

We’ve all been there. Millennials and our unhealthy sleeping habits. In the opening scene, Gemma is having a hard time sleeping then her alarm goes off. It’s time to wake up but she still hasn’t slept. This is important. We’ll go back here in the closing scene.
This is Barry's first day as a call center agent and their company's expectation of him is too high. He has to close a sale. ON. HIS. FIRST. DAY. Haven't we all been guilt-tripped one way or another because we are not doing enough?
The first part of the movie shows how mundane her life is. She can't sleep, gets up to go to work without enough rest, takes the bus, goes to work, trains some newbies, takes the MRT, tries to sleep, fails, then repeat.
Bored without an internet connection at the office, Gemma and Barry talk about superpowers on the rooftop.
Gemma chose flight. She wants to fly away. She aches to go somewhere. Barry chose time traveling. He wants to correct things in his past.

Zombie talk! What will you do during a zombie apocalypse? Gemma chose safety. She'll stay in a convenience store for food. Barry chose to fight and run.
In an art gallery with her boyfriend, Vince discusses how the painting means to him. She didn't get it. They are disconnected in how they talk with each other unlike conversations with Barry where anything goes.
It is now revealed that Barry is a father. Remember how he wants to be a time traveler? Yes, he wants to correct his past and be a good father and a boyfriend (maybe?).
While having dinner, they are talking about the couples in the carinderia. Gemma insists that all these relationships are doomed or a lie. He alleges that all these guys they see are cheating on their partners. Why could it be?
"May future ba yang call center na yan? Hindi ba dead-end job yan?"
Ahhh... the boomers are at it again. Because most of them enjoyed staying in the same company for decades now they can't see the future for us when we keep jumping to the next employer in a short span of time.

During the date, she looks at a couple & she's ready to diss them but he told her it's rude to look. Then she tried to be herself by asking him abt zombies, he answers but doesnt rlly care.
Imagine not being able to talk about whatever non-normie stuff you like with ur partner?!

Notice how at the beginning of their dinner he compliments her of how really good she looks especially wearing the expensive necklace he gave her.
I am convinced this relationship is just all about sex. They can't even have a non-small-talk conversation.

The box of toys he sent to his son got sent back and he is ready to quit his job because what's the point?
Am I the only millennial like Barry that when shit went down the drain, I then self-sabotage?

But he didn't do that for long because he has another plan, to go to Canada to find his son and ex-gf.
This is how important it is to have friends like Gem to check on you at your lowest. Go call your friend now!

Gem's flickering bathroom light was fixed by Barry.
This one is a metaphor of how he helped her "fix" her life by seeing her own value and that she doesn't have to be stuck in misery. There's a better way of living.

Then it was revealed what her biggest source of misery is: her affair with a family man. She was projecting her situation when she dissed all the guys in the carinderia -- not just with Vince but also with her mom who found another man after her father's death.
"Hoy wag ka magpapaka-tanga! Ba't ka ba nagtitiyaga dun?"
Again, we truly need a good friend who will slap us in the face with the truth sometimes. Someone who will challenge our own perceived reality if it is what is good for us or if it really is the only option we have.

"Siguro dahil ayaw niya mag-isa? Siguro dahil wala nang iba?"
If we're scared of dying alone, how come we're okay living in misery with someone? #SleeplessOnNetflix

Then this is the first time we see Gem finally freaking sleeping peacefully!
There's no love scene. They just slept face to face. They trust and find comfort with each other. I mean sex is cool but this. This I want! I want someone who gets me. #SleeplessOnNetflix

Barry lost his job and he's in a state of disarray again.
And we can relate. Maybe not about dreaming of being with our kid. But a dream! We have to stay in the rat race if we want to do what we really dream of doing in life. And that's sad.

Remember that necklace Vince gave her? Yeah, she sold that to help Barry realize his dream.
Not just that, this is the first step of her moving on. Maybe she was sleeping peacefully that night because she saw another reality where she's not miserable. And that's w/o him.

Only in the end did they embraced. If there's a point in this movie about love, it's that we fall in love with words and what's inside someone's head. If it's just sex and physical attraction, is love worth the trouble? Does your partner know you or just the moles on your skin?
Thoughts why they didn't end up together: They both love each other but Barry has to resolve the issue with his kid and Gem doesn't want to get in the way of that because it is painful for her when she lost her father. #SleeplessOnNetflix
Barry gave her a drawing of her being chased down by zombies before he catches his flight.
They. Just. Get. Each. Other.
How do I get someone like that? Asking for a friend.

In the closing scene, Gem sighed a sigh of relief after dismssing Vinz's call. She lied down & 4 all we know she slept soundly that night!
The complete opposite of the opening scene where she can't sleep.
In this pandemic, YES, IT WILL GET BETTER FOR US TOO. #SleeplessOnNetflix

Maybe Gem just wants someone who gets her when the inevitable zombie apocalypse comes. Someone who will find time for her in this fucking busy world and talk about things she cares about. Someone who'll be there when everyone isn't in the middle of the night. #SleeplessOnNetflix
