I start my project on Switzerland with total mortality:

Many Swiss will know this graphic. For all those who don't know, it is a graph from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office ( @StatSchweiz). We see strong excess mortality. Let's see how bad 2020 really was:

Thread 1/10
2/10 We see clearly that there is no excess mortality in the 0-64 age group. That is already good
3/10 I have compared the flu seasons of the last 5 years. (X axis pushed together). Where is the terrible excess mortality? Where is Covid?
4/10 I have marked COVID19 here in red. So this terrible disease that cannot be compared to a flu looks like this? I don't think so. Let's have a look at historical data:
5/10 Actually, I could stop here, you can clearly see that we only had a rough cold. But I compared the death toll over the last few years;
6/10 If we focus on Jan-Jun of the last years we see that 2020 was not special at all. you can't even see that we have had a (very terrible) pandemic...
7/10 March was definitely the month with the most deaths in 2020. But how does March compare with the deadliest months in the last 40 years? Very mild as expected....
8/10 Covid19 killed mainly in March and April. Let me introduce the top 10 deadliest Marches and Aprils: March 2020 (Covid killed the most people here) doesn't even made it into the top 10
9/10 April 2020 barely makes it to 9th place. To be fair, I would have to compare the two months with January and February. But since we had so few deaths, it is enough to look at 2015 or 2016 (graph 4)
10/10 To speak of a high level of excess mortality in Switzerland is simply more ridiculous. We had excess mortality in March and April because fewer people usually die in those months. Compared to the flu, Covid does not seem to kill more people.

This is the 1st thread of my project about Switzerland. there are several other threads in the pipeline. I will continue with hospitalizations or the effectiveness of our "Lockdown"
