On September 11, 2001, a Tuesday, I was in my office in Bridgewater MA working at Tyco Healthcare. Sometime around, 8:45 -9:00 that morning, my assistant came into my office saying, “OMG, a plane hit the tower in NYC”.

I left my office to go to her desk. On her computer were grainy images of a plane hitting a tower. By the time I saw these, our entire floor was beginning to see the same thing. We were in shock and couldn’t believe what we were seeing.

We began the task of checking every employee who would be flying that day. Logan was our home airport. I flew Internationally from that airport every month. I was scheduled to fly to London on September 16, the coming Sunday.

As our offices began to understand what we were seeing and news report began to tell the story, we identified around 18 people who were on planes coming home from various cities across the country. We verified that NONE were on any of the 3 planes that perished.

You can imagine the horror of knowing you have a family member or a colleague on a plane, but to see what happened to the many lives that were lost was too much for many of us. Until every person came off the planes on their way to Boston, we had difficulty doing any work.

The President of the company decided to put TV’s in the lunch room/cafeteria and urged people to gather together to talk and would provide time off for those who needed to leave in case any family were identified in the crashes.
Sadly, we had 13 employees who lost family

I can never forget that day. The upcoming anniversary every year reminds me of how scared I felt while at the same time I was determined to not let this stop us from moving forward and doing whatever we can to be normal, both personally and professionally.

On September 16, 2001, after much discussion with my husband and office, I got on my plane (American Airlines) that morning. I headed to a heavily secured Logan Airport. Entered an empty airport lined with armed security guards in military gear.
