Forgive me, I’m gonna science vent here with my limited science knowledge, bare with me:
A thread to explain the disaster that is 2020(?)
[Inspired by Austin from Game Theory]

So. There’s this thing called the Drake Equation that was created in 1961. Basically, it’s an equation to determine how many civilisations should exist within our galaxy. The current estimates are between 153-6300 civilisations. So the question is, where is everybody?

The Fermi Paradox basically asks exactly that question. Where are all these civilisations? We’ve been broadcasting signals into space to try and find these civilisations but quiet frankly, the galaxy is really big. Our broadcasts have barely covered any distance.

HOWEVER, if there were any sort of civilisations predating our own, wouldn’t they also be trying to do the same? Broadcasting and sending out proof of their existence? And wouldn’t we have heard or seen something by now if that were the case?

To go even deeper and the main point of this thread, we need to talk about Great Filters. What the heck is a Great Filter? Glad you asked. This principle was basically discovered(?)/created(?) in 1996, and is a somewhat answer to the Fermi Paradox.

Basically, a Great Filter is like a barrier that exists that needs to be overcome in order for life to survive. What if this is the reason why we see no evidence of life? But this also poses a greater question, have we overcome this Great Filter, or are we leading up to it?

This is an answer to the Fermi Paradox as it basically says, we don’t see evidence of life because there’s something that keeps wiping them out. Why is this relevant at all? What if we are reaching/have reached The Great Filter?

It is scientifically proven that we are currently in the process of the next mass extinction, with alarming rates of species going extinct everyday. And we already have a name for this extinction, you can literally google it, I’m not kidding. Anyway, back to the point.

The question is, what if the reason why the years have continued to get worse and worse because we are on the cusp of reaching the great filter? The same reason why we cannot seem to locate other civilisations.

Thanks for joining me on my science rant. Do with this information what you will, I’m gonna go cry in the corner and hope that 2021 is better than this year and we’re not about to reach the Great Filter that wipes us out. Enjoy your overthinking.
