Some say $15M is too much to spent on the G position. According to whom? If other positions are well filled with the balance, does it matter? And this is one year, when the #habs have a ton of cap space, and a back up coming up who will be cheap for some time. The cap is fine.
Do you want to hear what’s batshit? Paying $10.5M for your G position, and then riding him like a rented mule packing on hard miles in years when you have no hope to contend. A strong back up is essential to extending Carey’s peak years. The addition is good. #Habs
Some fans would have preferred a UFA goalie. Sure... which one? Which of those UFAs are coming in as good as Allen, for less than Allen at one year? How many of them are looking to start? The #habs have their future back up. They needed a veteran bridge. The choice is great.
Some thought Allen would be a salary dump in another deal. In 2019-20 he played 27 games - a perfect # for Carey’s back up - with a .927 sv%. In 5 PO games he was .935. They swapped 7th rounders and the #habs gave up the 3rd they got for Kovy, a free asset. The price was right.
What was the rush for the #habs to sign a backup? None I guess. Except when other teams are competing for the best of the UFA class, Bergevin will be able to avoid that distraction and focus on filling other holes. The timing was perfect.
When Price signed that contract, anyone with foresight could see - they need to get him a solid back up so they can get the absolute best out of that deal. These playoffs seem to have really clarified that for Bergevin. A rested Carey is deadly. It’s about time. #Habs
Who knows? Allen might fall off a cliff and this addition becomes regrettable. But there are no indications of that as there were with Kinkaid. You can only make deals based on what is known. The deal is good. #Habs
