On the blog today, Fran Gallio presents a short history of the Jagonari Centre in Whitechapel.

Established in 1987, the centre responded to the needs of local women in the area by providing childcare facilities, language training and support for victims of domestic violence.👇
The centre reflected a period of growing political mobilisation within the Bengali community. 🇧🇩

Political activism became necessary for the community as a way to combat instances of rampant racism and social deprivation.
The building housing the Jagonari Centre was created by the all-women architectural group 'Matrix'. Their design emphasised a 'hybrid, syncretic architectural space' that would be welcoming for women from all cultures and backgrounds.
