I see this issue of maternal deaths is catching the attention it deserves(finally).im going to add my two cents to the conversation.from my experience with what I have seen in the field..not whats supposed to happen, but what happens now.
The public deserves the truth about what exactly happens in our hospitals then they can understand that sometimes the HCW’s hands are tied.negligence is there,I really hope whoever is found negligent van be brought to book.i am not defending my colleagues,i would never if they
Wrong.commn conditions that account for maternal deaths are Post partum bleeding, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy including pre eclampsia and eclampsia, abortions, ante partum haemorrhage to a lesser degree.
Now lets get to how things are currently..NRH(the largest referral centre in the North)has only one(yes 1),qualified specialist.obstetrician and gynaecologist.test of the department is run by medical officers.Medical officers who do procedures for specialists..
They are brilliant, they know what they are doing, but you know how our system is..once something happens people will ask why were you doing a TAH when you arent a specialist..i can count how many there are..less than ten in the whole department.and we expect perfection from them..
Come on people..how can one specialist and six medical officers manage a department in a huge referral centre?and we expect zero maternal deaths?back when i was working in Maun,in Letsholathebe we would do calls alone for the whole hospital..like alone..with your intern only.
This is absurd..because a 250 bed hospital with only two Drs at night is a recipe for disaster.when you are busy somewhere else with an emergency, another patient is dying in another ward..
There is absolutely zero support to the people on the ground, who are actually doing the job,but it is always them who get too much http://stick.it  is them who are considered killers when things go wrong.from the example i put up ya NRH,those Drs are doing more than they
Should http://actually.in  medicine we work when we are licenced to do stuff..i cant operate abd purpot to be a surgeon unless i have gone to school and im licenced..once something goes wrong, they will be ridiculed bythe same ministry thats making them work under these
Conditions..
Sometimes we run out of very important drugs like Magnesium sulphate..i can tell you managing patients without essential drugs is a nightmare.the troubles we have to go to to cut corners in teying to save the patient’s life are too much.our health system is a big big MESS.
