I’m so sick of running
As fast as I can
Wondering if I’d get there quicker
If I was a man

Despite 4/5 of the main characters of HP being men, the drama has given enough attention to the women characters who are all beautifully strong in their own right, giving us a number of wonderful female role models.

The show challenges the power imbalance between sexes from the very fact that Songhwa is shown as the anchor of the five. Aside from this, out of the main, she is also the one emphasized to be leading a group in a workplace setting.

I believe that Songhwa’s eating pace is a manifestation of her struggle to make her mark in a male-dominated field. Notice she always says, “I have 3 brothers”. Just as how she eats fast, she also rushes to get more work done.

In her character profile you can see just how much she’s determined to establish herself in NS while paving the way for more women in the field.

This is similar to Gyeoul and Iksun who are both shown to be capable enough to handle their own amongst men - Gyeoul, being the only female and only resident of 13 GS male doctors, and Iksun, challenging the status quo and rising ranks in the military.

Aside from the gender stereotypes, seeing the similarities between Gyeoul and Junwan, we become more aware of society’s double standards - that somehow people find it less acceptable when women are impersonal and straightforward.

Moreover, society has a way of pitting different women against each other and HP’s answer to this is the unlikely friendship of Gyeoul and Minha. One is simple and calm, while the other is voguish and outgoing -different, but equally wonderful females.

Coincidentally, both friends are also straightforward in pursuing love, again, breaking stereotypes where men are expected to make the first move.

Finally, HP questions the expectation that women are destined for marriage. If they choose to raise a family like Rosa and Younghye, then that’s wonderful. But they’re equally entitled to want otherwise - just like Iksun’s hesitation on marriage and SHwa enjoying being single.
Ultimately, what matters most is women getting equal opportunity and making informed choices for themselves, as well as resisting the systemic inequalities and harmful mindsets that hinder them from doing so. So, queens, take up space!!!
