When I was 6 i lived for a while in kibera and wheew. Poverty is the evilest of all evils man. I had a friend who was my age & she had 2 younger siblings. Her mother was reeeeeeally irresponsible and was never home. I used to think it was so funny that my friend would wash the /1
younger ones by dipping them in cold water in this big steel basin for like 1 minute and call that a bath. I now remember her doing that and literally cry. I don& #39;t think I& #39;ve ever seen anything sadder. Had this other friend whose mum separated with their dad. The mum got /2
really drunk one day and burnt the dad& #39;s photos in front of the kids omg. This isn& #39;t particular to the ghetto, but the way things were set up in that hood nothing was private and the mother caused quite a spectacle. I& #39;m sure something died in that little girl& #39;s heart that day. /3
I remember hearing of mothers giving their newborns drops of alcohol to make them sleep for days so they could go do their thing. I particularly remember this woman beating up some man (think it was her man) and saying & #39;unajua nilitombwa ndio nipate pesa ya hiyo karae& #39;https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😭" title="Laut schreiendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Laut schreiendes Gesicht"> I& #39;d /4
never heard that word so I asked my auntie what it meanthttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😭" title="Laut schreiendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Laut schreiendes Gesicht">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😭" title="Laut schreiendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Laut schreiendes Gesicht"> oh. I also remember hearing noises from the hood that I now recognize as sexhttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😭" title="Laut schreiendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Laut schreiendes Gesicht">The ghetto is a fucking sad place man.

Had the pleasure of experiencing both urban and rural poverty though, so my catalogue is broad https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💀" title="SchĂ€del" aria-label="Emoji: SchĂ€del"> /5
When i lived in shagz we were better off and I went to private school and had new toughees every year and a puppy and every time my mum came from nai she brought me cream doughnuts from bakers inn and storybooks from Savani& #39;s. I was sort of the resident rich kid in shagz /6
(although we& #39;d kopa food from the shops like everybody else) Ah man. Ushago poverty is something else. Kids wouldn& #39;t wear shoes to school and their uniforms were tattered and mind you this is mt kenya back in the day so mornings were sooo fucking cold you couldn& #39;t see past the /7
fog and your fingernails would fucking turn purple and you couldn& #39;t move them. They didn& #39;t serve lunch at their school and most couldn& #39;t carry lunch bc there was no food at home. They& #39;d listen to what we had for lunch at my school and sneer and say that it sounded disgusting /8
but I now recognize it as envy. Used to cry when they said that lol. And they& #39;d call our school bus & #39;makorofia& #39; (avocado) idk why it made me cry though lmaoooo.

I think about how fortunate I am to live the life I live now. That I can sit here and worry about feminism /9
& sexuality & gender fluidity & chakras. Lol. That I even know what those terms mean in the first place? Most of my childhood friends didn& #39;t go past form 2. I have one who was in prison when I was doing my kcpe omghttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😭" title="Laut schreiendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Laut schreiendes Gesicht">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💀" title="SchĂ€del" aria-label="Emoji: SchĂ€del"> I am so so grateful for my life and ik I escaped so I /10
could make a difference.
