Well this is a potential game changer. An important critical assessment of the Nebra Sky disk suggests it *could* in fact be Iron Age 🤯 1/ https://twitter.com/DGUF1969/status/1301405017056989184
The authors' arguments centre around the fact that the 'hoard' deposit of EBA axes and swords that relatively date the Disk cannot be proved as a closed find 2/
And that the iconography fits better with the first millennium BC. Also, the possible original findspot had the remains of an Iron Age fortification. 3/
Though the authors state that they were unable to fully access all the full suite of documentation around the discovery and scientific analysis of the hoard so this interpretation must be taken cautiously. (This also highlights the importance of open access data!) 4/
I remain on the fence about this interpretation and I'm sure it won't be the last time the Nebra Disk is subject to debate! But it shows the necessity of approaching the discovery of finds critically. Certainly food for thought... 5/5
