THREAD:
How to confront someone you DISAGREE with:

1) It is VERY important to assume that they have the same goal as you. They want everyone to live better. When someone has a different opinion than you about the best way to help children, it doesn& #39;t mean they hate children.
Clichés like this are INCREDIBLY TOXIC:
"Democrats only care about Black lives when it fits their narrative"
"Republicans only care about babies before they& #39;re born"

What does this say? Do you really think half the country doesn& #39;t care about babies? Wrong. Divisive. Gross.
You should be picking your battles wisely. Avoid engaging people harboring a divisive mindset I just mentioned.

If you choose to engage someone like this, ask yourself why you want to have the engagement. Are you trying to learn why they believe something? Or are you lecturing?
Make sure there you both know the specific problem being discussed, and be solutions-oriented. Find a problem that you both agree exists, then focus on an honest discussion of possible solutions.

Acknowledge opposing viewpoints with respect and dignity before giving yours.
"Yes, but..." is a sign that you are lecturing, and not trying to have a conversation. Ask the questions that might address your concerns with an argument. Use specifics and be careful not to misrepresent the argument in your questions.
Use allegory. Personally, I& #39;m a non-theist, but I& #39;ll never shy away from using the bible to draw parallels between ideas. If religion isn& #39;t your thing, use classic movies or literature.

Good stories have meaning, teachable moments, conflicts, and resolutions. Use them.
Adjust your expectations. This is twitter, a platform meant to connect people through little 140 (then 280) character messages. This isn& #39;t the best place for complex ideas to be exchanged.

Go have coffee with someone you disagree with. You will be a better person for it.
The worst pandemic we face is the highly contagious infection of a divisive mindset.

I can do better, and I must.
